I...All I have to say is, "I second that". I completely agree. My little cousin Sophie is such a princess. I often wonder how much of it is her natural personality and how much is imposed on her from our culture.

It makes me angry every time I see a commercial for Swiffer, Pledge, Dyson, Cascade...the list goes on...because it's ALWAYS a woman demonstrating how great the product is and how it has made HER life easier. Can't a man vacuum or wash dishes? Which is exactly why you're right, it is harmful to girls and boys. If a little boy never sees a man doing those things, it makes sense that he would think that is a "woman's job" because that's who he sees doing it. The same holds true on the other side. Have you ever seen a Jiffy Lube commercial with a female changing someone's oil or a Ford commercial with a woman driving the F250? I think not...
Our media perpetuates gender roles. Period. That is why it is so important for people like you and me to teach children that what they see on TV is not reality.

I could go on, but I'm preaching to the choir :)beachbum44https://www.blogger.com/profile/14850073446010086074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916416825093476865.post-54984264537903706992010-01-26T21:39:31.731-05:002010-01-26T21:39:31.731-05:00Also, I only removed your second comment, Sarah, s...Also, I only removed your second comment, Sarah, since it was a double post. I didn't know it would be all like "Brittany DELETED SARAH'S COMMENT". Rather incendiary of google, if you ask me.Vesuvius At Homehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02783271096885148080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916416825093476865.post-55730685546984440222010-01-26T21:37:23.497-05:002010-01-26T21:37:23.497-05:00Thanks Eve. I still think it is possible, I think ...Thanks Eve. I still think it is possible, I think I just underestimated the strength of the force working against me. I don't mind if my daughters want to be princesses sometimes--I just don't want them to think that's the only option.

Sarah--Fiona is good! I worry that Ayla doesn't understand the subtleties of Mulan yet, i.e the "Be a man" song--it's meant to be ironic about male stereotypes but I think the irony is over Ayla's head.

The wedding thing is troublesome. I constantly marvel at movies that think a marriage is a good storyline for children's movies! It doesn't make sense.

As for Beth Moore, I couldn't find much info on her, but if I must be a princess, I hope to be more like Boudicca and less like Cinderella!Vesuvius At Homehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02783271096885148080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916416825093476865.post-4117090985624533392010-01-24T22:00:23.787-05:002010-01-24T22:00:23.787-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Loya Familyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15510025412728001616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916416825093476865.post-21424891487732776172010-01-24T22:00:03.927-05:002010-01-24T22:00:03.927-05:00Thanks. I too have this concerns with sweet Cora. ...Thanks. I too have this concerns with sweet Cora. She is into barbies and all we ever play is princess. Though often times we are princess super heroes! More like Fiona from Shrek. But what gets me is the instant love, kisses, and marriage. She talks about it all the time. I tell her not everyone gets married. But she doesn't care. She is always the princess and her 2yr old brother is the prince (usually Prince Eric) whom she marries and then has kids. ---Mostly harmless. But that's the part that gets me the fairy tales love stories. Butfairy tales are, dream like. Not real life.
---just FYI Mulan, and Fiona are pretty kick butt if you ask me. :-)
-----Lastly. I did take a Beth Moore study "The Inheritance," like it or not you are a princess. :-)Loya Familyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15510025412728001616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916416825093476865.post-11469354013085848862010-01-21T23:58:59.128-05:002010-01-21T23:58:59.128-05:00Once again, Brittany, that was brilliantly said. ...Once again, Brittany, that was brilliantly said. As a born feminist myself, I constantly fret about the daunting task of raising my two daughters to be stereotype bashers and trail blazers; girls who are strong and confident in who they are. We've got a real battle ahead of us! Thanks for posting your thoughts. I really enjoyed reading them.evelizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09196935979437183222noreply@blogger.com
